MISSPELLED — DETAILS

HIGH CONCEPT & ORIGIN

Spell your way to the headmaster's office of your idyllic wizarding school to cleanse it from a once-in-a-lifetime perturbation of evil forces! In Slay the Spire X Balatro X Scrabble gameplay, you must spell words correctly to cast magic spells to overcome the obstacles in your way. Upgrade tiles between combat to increase your prowess, find vestiges to power up you attacks, and combo the correct elemental magic to maximize your defence and damage.
Misspelled was initially created by a team of six — two each of artists, designers, and programmers — for the 2026 Quiver Games Town One game jam. The design stemmed from a member's desire to create a turn-based game. After the jam, four of us agreed to restart development and develop the game more fully.

MAP GENERATION

Misspelled gave me the chance to create an - as far as I know - novel procedural map generation system. While conceptually simple, it provides a good blend of tunability, safety, and uniqueness. Conceptually, the map is generated by starting at cell 0,0 of a square grid, then repeatedly stepping right or up until reaching the top right corner of the grid. Place rooms along that path, either at set points (the starting room, midway rest point, and final boss room), or following some rules based distribution (2 easy combats prior to room 5, 2 shops after room 6) etc.
